Strict national regulator
UK Gambling Commission (UKGC)
Players in Great Britain. The licence covers gambling offered to people in Great Britain, so it says nothing about how a casino treats players elsewhere.
My verdict
This is one of the strictest licences I deal with. Slot stake caps, spin-speed rules and mandatory GAMSTOP mean a UKGC casino has real limits on how it can treat you. The catch is the paperwork: ID and source-of-funds checks are routine, and the regulator will not resolve your dispute for you. That is why I give a clean UKGC licence the top Licensing score.
What it requires from casinos
- Online slots stakes are capped at £5 per spin, or £2 for players aged 18 to 24.
- Slots must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin. Autoplay, turbo, quick spin and slam stop are banned.
- Bonus wagering is capped at 10x, and offers cannot force you to play across several product types (from 19 January 2026).
- The operator must verify your name, address and date of birth before you can gamble.
- It must tell you how your balance is protected if it fails: not protected, medium or high.
What to watch out for
- The Commission does not settle individual disputes. Your route is the operator, then an ADR provider.
- Fund protection is disclosed, not guaranteed. A 'not protected' balance counts as company assets in an insolvency.
- Expect ID checks before play and possible source-of-funds questions on large deposits.
How to check a casino holds this licence
Search by business name, trading name, domain or account number. The record shows licence status and any regulatory action.
If you have a dispute
Complain to the operator first. If it is not resolved within eight weeks, you can take it to a free, approved ADR provider. The Commission itself cannot resolve individual complaints.
Enforcement example: In November 2025 the Commission fined Videoslots Limited £650,000 for social responsibility and anti-money laundering failures, including monthly deposit limits that did not work as intended.
Self-exclusion
GAMSTOP: Every online operator licensed in Great Britain has had to take part since 31 March 2020. One sign-up covers all of them for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years.
More about UKGC
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is the statutory regulator for commercial gambling in Great Britain. It is one of the strictest national regulators in the world. Licensed operators must segregate player funds, participate in IBAS dispute resolution, enforce responsible gambling tools (self-exclusion, deposit limits, affordability checks), and meet regular audit requirements. Licence numbers are publicly verifiable on the UKGC register.

UKGC licence questions
Does GAMSTOP cover every UKGC-licensed casino?
Yes for online operators. Since 31 March 2020 all online operators licensed in Great Britain must take part. It does not cover casinos licensed elsewhere.
What is the maximum slot stake at a UKGC casino?
£5 per spin, or £2 if you are 18 to 24. The caps apply to online slots only, not roulette or blackjack.
Can the UK Gambling Commission get my money back?
No. It cannot resolve individual complaints. Complain to the operator, then use the free ADR provider it names after eight weeks.
