Strict national regulator

Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ)

Players in Spain. Only operators licensed by the DGOJ may offer online gambling there, and licensed sites run identity and age checks.

My verdict

Spain has some of the hardest-wired player protection I review: legal deposit caps, mandatory session limits and a national ban register that operators must respect. You get safety rather than generosity, and the regulator is not a complaints desk. A clean DGOJ licence earns the top Licensing score.

What it requires from casinos

  • Statutory deposit caps of €600 a day, €1,500 a week and €3,000 a month per account. Gambling on credit is not allowed.
  • Raising a cap needs passing the regulator's safe-play tests, no risky behaviour in the last three months, and three months since the last increase.
  • For casino-style 'other games' you must set a maximum session time and loss before you start.
  • Live betting limits are €600 a day, €1,500 a week and €3,000 a month.

What to watch out for

  • The caps apply by default, and lifting them is deliberately hard.
  • A site without a DGOJ licence gives you no regulatory route in Spain.

If you have a dispute

The DGOJ site has a complaints and reports section (Denuncias y reclamaciones). Its page does not describe the DGOJ ruling on individual disputes, so start with the operator.

Enforcement example: In November 2025 Spain's consumer ministry, through the DGOJ, sanctioned 32 operators for about €33.5 million, including €100,000 for Betfair over player protection failures and €512,000 for Electraworks Ceuta, partly for letting barred players gamble.

Self-exclusion

RGIAJ: National register of gambling bans. Registration is free, online operators are notified automatically, and you can ask for cancellation only after 6 months.
