Strict national regulator

Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen)

Players in Sweden. Only gambling licensed in Sweden may be advertised there, and each licence covers a specific type of gambling.

My verdict

Sweden is one of the tightest markets I review: mandatory deposit limits, one bonus per player and a national self-exclusion register. The trade-off is less flexibility and more operator intervention in your play. Disputes go through ARN, not the regulator. A clean Swedish licence earns the top Licensing score.

What it requires from casinos

  • An operator may offer a bonus only the first time you play with it.
  • You cannot gamble until you set deposit limits per day, week and month. Increases take at least 72 hours.
  • Operators must be connected to Spelpaus and block anyone registered.
  • Operators' systems and random number generators must be certified by accredited firms.

What to watch out for

  • The authority does not settle individual disputes. ARN gives a recommendation, not a court ruling.
  • A Swedish licence applies to Swedish players, and Spelpaus only blocks Swedish-licensed sites.
  • The duty of care is strict: expect contact, limits or interventions if your play looks risky.

If you have a dispute

Spelinspektionen does not approve operators' terms. For a payout dispute you can file with ARN, which recommends a settlement that most companies follow, or go to court. Unfair terms or misleading marketing go to the Consumer Agency.

Self-exclusion

Spelpaus: National register covering all Swedish-licensed gambling companies. Choose 10 days, 1, 3 or 6 months, or until further notice (at least 12 months). You cannot end it early.

More about Spelinspektionen

Spelinspektionen is Sweden’s national gambling regulator, overseeing the licensed market created by the 2019 Gambling Act. It is one of the stricter national regimes in Europe: licensed operators must segregate player funds, connect players to the central Spelpaus self-exclusion register, enforce deposit and loss limits, follow strict marketing rules, and meet anti-money-laundering and duty-of-care obligations. Licences are publicly verifiable on the Spelinspektionen register, and the authority can fine or revoke operators that breach the rules.

Spelinspektionen licence questions

Does Spelpaus block unlicensed casinos?

No. It covers only companies licensed in Sweden. Unlicensed sites are outside it.

Can a Swedish casino give me several bonuses?

No. An operator may offer only one bonus, even if its licence covers several sites, and you get at least 60 days to meet the conditions.

Who handles a payout dispute in Sweden?

ARN, the National Board for Consumer Disputes. It assesses the case and recommends a settlement. You can also go to court.
