Strict national regulator

New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE)

Players physically in New Jersey. Internet gaming is run by approved permit holders, originally limited to Atlantic City casino licensees.

My verdict

New Jersey is the oldest regulated US online market, and the DGE publishes its approved site list and a clear dispute path. Player limits and timeouts are built in. I rate a clean New Jersey licence at the top Licensing level, but you must use a listed site and follow the complaint steps in order.

What it requires from casinos

  • Gaming systems must let you set your own deposit, spend and time limits.
  • You can request a timeout from 72 hours to a year, during which you can still withdraw.
  • Once lifetime deposits pass $2,500 you must acknowledge responsible gaming information before wagering again.
  • Operators must show how to file complaints with the licensee and the DGE.

What to watch out for

  • The Division takes disputes only after the casino has responded.
  • Approvals are issued on a rolling basis, so check the live list rather than a screenshot.

How to check a casino holds this licence

Check the Internet Gaming Authorized Sites list. Any site not on it is not approved to offer internet gaming in New Jersey.

If you have a dispute

File a complaint with the casino first. Once you have its response, you can send the Division an Internet Gaming Dispute Form with your original complaint and the casino's reply.

Self-exclusion

DGE Self-Exclusion Program: Covers all internet gaming and sports wagering. Online sign-up is one or five years, and lifetime is available through in-person or video sign-up.
